Anna City Council Place 4 Candidates
Written by Jeremy Corley
Friday, 09 May 2008
Name: Jon Hendricks
Occupation: Owner / President of Print Appeal, Inc. Dallas, Texas
70 employees, 65 sales reps – Showrooms in Dallas, Chicago & Atlanta
Position you’re running for:
City Council - Place 4
Previous experience with city or school district:
Booster Club President
Anna Youth Sports Association President
City Councilmember
Mayor of Anna
Anna Park Board Chairman
Community Development Board
Why are you running?
My family has been in Anna for generations. This is my hometown and I truly love this town. I have seen where we have been and lived here and been involved in this City during its growing years. I have a lot to offer and I want to be involved in the direction we are headed.
What would you like to change?
I want to see this town develop, but in a way that adds value to our town rather than diminish our property values and possibly create a future tax burden on the citizens who live here now.
I want to see more commercial development that will create more sales tax to help relieve the future tax burden on property owners.
I want to see more parks developed to alleviate the immediate need we have for sports fields for the many children involved in our athletic programs while incorporating features to be used by the general public.
We need long-range plans to ensure that we have the vital roads and utilities to accommodate future growth.
I would like to see steps taken to improve the aesthetics of our town which will give all of us more pride in where we live.
Why are you the best candidate for the position?
I have the civic and business experience to handle any issue or problem that could possibly come before the City Council.  I have made many recommendations on various issues and development plans over the years that have been followed and/or implemented.  I have the ability to react quickly to immediate issues or problems while also being able to analyze and create goals for long range plans.  I have never aligned myself with any outside interest.  My interest are the same as every person in Anna, and that is to make this the best possible community to live and/or work.  I have a lot of good ideas and suggestions to give and I am willing to work hard for the benefit of EVERYONE who lives or operates a business in Anna.
Endorsements received:
Kenneth Pelham – Mayor of Anna
Billy Deragon – Mayor Pro Tem of Anna
Kimberly Dawes-Luther – President, Anna Chamber of Commerce

Name: Darren R. Driskell
Occupation: Owner Cornerstone Consulting Independent Energy Broker Service
Position you’re running for: Anna City Council Place 4
Previous experience with city or school district:
Planning and Zoning Board
Board of Adjustments
Work closely with EDC
CERT (Civilian Emergency Response Team) Certified
Neighborhood Watch Coordinator; West Crossing
Previously HOA Vice President in McKinney
Why are you running?
I have a sincere interest in the future of the city that my family lives in. I want to see the communication between our government and the citizens greatly improved. There are many opportunities readily available to us right here in our city to further this effort. I also have a desire to see us stay small as we grow. I intend to achieve this by supporting as many community events that go on in our city as possible.
What would you like to change?
First I see a need for a much better conduit of communication from the city to its citizenry such as improvement of the city Web site and the newsletter that has been sent out in the past. Secondly, I believe now is the time to face the growth of Anna. We must support the newly formed Master Plan Committee by providing them the necessary resources to achieve the goal of a Master Plan for Anna in a timely manner. Thirdly we need to review the communication within the Anna City Government and the respective boards. We have to make an effort to streamline some of our processes so that the people wishing to do business with Anna are not overly burdened with the lengthy process that has been in place. This can be addressed again with better communication and direction from the City Council to all boards and staff.
Why are you the best candidate for the position?
I have spent the last year developing relationships with many of the business and property owners in our area so that I have an understanding of their needs and how they will fit into our City.  Being on the Planning and Zoning Board as well as the Board of Adjustments and regular attendance at the City Council meetings, has offered me this opportunity. Having knowledge of many of our ordinances as they apply to business has been very beneficial to these types of relationships. I have an incredibly diverse background including traveling to many foreign countries during my military service and being able to affectively communicate at all levels in those countries. I am also always looking for opportunities to save the city money. Last year I was able to work with Councilman Anderson and bring to light the need to change service providers for the City’s electric service. This resulted in a contract saving the city $75,000 - $100,000 on their electric bills annually. With all of this and much more, I am certain that I am the person best suited for this seat at this time. A vote for Darren R. Driskell is a vote for community, open communication, and change. I appreciate your vote and look forward to serving the City of Anna for years to come. God Bless.

Position you’re running for:

Previous experience with city or school district:

Why are you running?
The people voted to pass an $80 million bond to do certain specified things. Since I was involved in the original plan, and have had a lot of experience with planning new schools,  I would like to see this finished and I believe I will add expertise and new ideas for the future of the district. The Board is very diversified and works well together.
What would you like to change?
We (The Board) have changed so much in the past five years, but we have set flexible goals.  I would like to see these goals to fruition.
Why are you the best candidate for the position?
I believe that my experience on the Board (for the 5 years I have served currently) and my previous experiences in education have given me the knowledge and expertise to help make a difference in the future development of the district. School trustees  are obligated to continue education through courses offered by the Texas Education Agency.  These courses are to aid trustees in becoming more knowledgeable and able to help lead a school district.  I have completed double the number of credits required since I became a member of the board.
Endorsements received:
I think that my record speaks for itself. I have not looked for particular endorsements because I feel the district is behind us all.

Name: Tina Helmberger
Occupation:
Wife, mother of five, homemaker and business owner
Position you’re running for:
School Board Place 2
Previous experience with city or school district:
I have been a volunteer for the MISD for 11 years and substitute teacher. Since I am a certified teacher, I have helped out in the past during TAKS testing. I have been very involved with the Melissa Area Chamber of Commerce, serving as Vice Chairman in the past and currently serving as Chairman.
Why are you running?
Being a mother of five in the MISD district and former teacher, I felt the calling to serve on the MISD School Board.  I felt the urge to run in the past, but had too much on my plate at the time.  I am currently in the process of resigning a few of my volunteer positions in order to focus on running for school board.
What would you like to change?
I don’t think there is anything in particular that I would like to change as I believe we have an outstanding school district.  What I would like to do is be able to add input concerning athletic and fine arts issues, as I have children focusing in each of these areas.  I would like to help strengthen the partnerships with the city and community as we are all striving to make Melissa the best it can be.
Why are you the best candidate for the position?
I am the best candidate for the position because I have a vested interest in continuing to improve our schools to be the best they can be.  I can help strengthen the partnerships with the MISD, city and business community since I have been heavily involved with the chamber for the past three years.  Having children in the school district, I am ready and eager to work hard to help shape the education for tomorrow’s leaders!

In regards to my experience with the city, I have been involved with the Anna Youth Sports Association.  I am an assistant softball coach, I have been an assistant basketball coach and recently I was on the Day in the Park Fundraising Committee.

As the Anna ISD plans for the growth of our town and student body I want to make sure we are able to accommodate for educational growth that will help our students prepare for their future.  There are many educational advantages out there to explore that would fit our community and benefit our students to give them equal opportunities to compete in the ever changing society. I would like to help research these opportunities and implement them into the district.
What would you like to change?
I believe the current board is doing a great job. I just want to enhance and promote communication with parents and teachers.

Her ability to juggle the demands of her professional career while still staying involved on many fronts in the Anna community is one of her many strengths. She is organized, committed, communicates effectively, works extremely well with a very diverse set of personalities and doesn’t give up on a good idea. Larissa can get the job done.. Name: Mark Jones
Occupation:
Vice President of Sales and Marketing- Bentonville International Group
Position you’re running for:
Place 7 Anna ISD Board of Trustees
Previous experience with city or school district:
Baseball, Basketball, Football Coach AYSA 5 years, Classroom volunteer, Husband of 5th grade teacher.
Why are you running?
I am running for school board because I am so proud to be part of this community and school district.  Both have offered many unique opportunities to my children and my family. The health and vitality of a community is often measured by the success of its schools and it is imperative that our schools are successful so that the children and young adults of Anna can be successful as they move on to adult life.
What would you like to change?
Growth is a good thing, but can present many challenges to our school district.  It is the responsibility of the school board to continue to plan for and provide the infrastructure necessary to accommodate our growing population while giving our children the best education available.  As we grow, we must attract and retain the best teachers we possibly can.  I want to see our school board focusing on today but keeping an eye on and planning for the future at the same time.
Why are you the best candidate for the position?
Our district’s success depends on its leaders to guide and support our teachers in a growing district.  My experience in leadership and management will compliment the outstanding board we have today.  I will bring strong leadership skills and a successful track record to the board with an unbiased objectivity.  I have no other agenda than to help foster the academic excellence of our schools.  I will have children in elementary, middle school and high school and every decision I make will be based on the merits without emotion or favoritism.  My goal is to help move our already great school system to one of “exemplary” status.
